Pottsgrove Manor To Host 'Backcountry Cooking' Demonstration

The art of 18th century hearth cooking will be on display Feb. 16 at the historic site.

Have you ever wanted to see what cooking was like well before the Frigidaire and dual-oven range? 

Guests to Pottsgrove Manor, an 18th century home of John Potts, the founder of Pottstown, will be able to see some "Backcountry Cooking" with a display on Feb. 16.

For just a $2 suggested donation, those of all ages are welcome to the event slated for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the histroical site's web page.

"While the Potts family could afford to eat fine dishes using imported ingredients, most colonists consued much simpler fare," said the event's brochure. "In this demonstration, see Pottsgrove Manor's colonial cooks in action as they create dishes that would have been familiar to rural Americans living in the 18th century."

The home's kitchen has been reconstructed to display hearth-style cooking.
