POTTSTOWN, PA — The man who shot an officer in the midst of a barricade in Pottstown Sunday night was later shot and killed by police, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office confirmed Monday.

Andrew Jackson Ecker, 25, was shot and killed at around 10:45 p.m. after some five hours of barricading himself inside his home, police said.

Ecker was involved in a two-car crash at around 5 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Beech and Mount Vernon Streets.

It's not clear exactly what happened next. Early reports from police indicated that Ecker became involved in a struggle with responding officers over his firearm that was inside the vehicle. Ecker then fled the scene on foot, and barricaded himself inside his nearby home on Winding Way, according to the DA.

While inside his home, Ecker fired multiple shots at officers, striking Pottstown Police Officer Caleb Whitney in the shoulder, officials said.

A shelter in place was announced for the neighborhood as SWAT teams and law enforcement swarmed the area. One of Ecker's relatives arrived and helped a SWAT negotiator establish contact with Ecker, who refused to leave the house.

Negotiations did not seem work, however, and at around 10:45 p.m., Ecker was shot and killed, police said.

The injured officer was treated at Reading Hospital and was released late Sunday night.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting, as they do with all officer-involved shootings.
