RADNOR, PA —Construction crews were repairing a deep hole in the South Wayne Municipal Parking Lot in Radnor Township Wednesday afternoon as part of an ongoing project to prevent flooding during heavy rainstorms.

The hole is adjacent to the Radnor Fire Department on South Wayne Avenue across the street from the U.S. Post office and near Radnor Middle School.

“Everyone may be wondering why there is a huge hole in the township parking lot,” Stephen F. Norcini, township engineer, said Monday night during a commissioners meeting.

Stephen Abbonizio, president of Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., Conshohocken, notified the township in August that unexpected old pipes were found underground, creating problems with the groundwater.

During heavy rains, Ithan Creek is unable to contain the water from flowing into South Wayne Avenue.

The commissioners also agreed to receive bids for three additional stormwater management projects:

  • Wyldhaven Road and South Ithan Avenue
  • Morris Road and Clover Lane
  • Morris Road and South Devon Avenue

Stormwater management is also an issue being addressed in nearby Easttown and Tredyffrin townships.
