PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on 22, 78
Motorists urged to avoid unnecessary travel as winter storm bears down on Lehigh Valley.

PennDOT has reduced the speed limit on Route 22 and Interstate 78 to 45 mph because of road conditions created by the winter storm that got under way in the Lehigh Valley this afternoon.
The state transportation department is recommending that motorists avoid all unnecessary travel.
While PennDOT recommends not traveling during winter storms, motorists can
check road conditions on more than 2,900 miles of state roads by calling
5-1-1Β or visitingΒ www.511PA.com.

511PA, which is free and available 24 hours aΒ day,Β provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, average traffic speedsΒ onΒ urban interstates and access to more than 670 traffic cameras.Β
The 511 siteΒ also provides easy-to-use, color-coded winter road conditions for allΒ interstates and other routes covered in the 511 reporting network. RegionalΒ Twitter alerts are also available on the 511PA website.
PennDOT also asks motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plowΒ trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators,
motoristsΒ should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading
winterΒ materials.
PennDOT reminds motorists to pack an emergency kit for their vehicles. A
basicΒ kit should include non-perishable food, water, blanket, small shovel and
warmΒ clothes.Β

When preparing an emergency kit, motorists should take into
accountΒ special needs of passengers such as baby food, pet supplies or medicationsΒ andΒ pack accordingly.

andΒ car emergency kit checklists and emergency plan templates, are available atΒ www.ReadyPA.orgΒ or by calling 1-888-9-READYPA.Β
