Salisbury to Study Wastewater Flow on East Side

Salisbury Township is required to determine what's causing pipe flow problems into Allentown Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is requiring and neighboring municipalities to determine what's causing pipe flow problems into the Allentown Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Township Engineer Dave Tettemer said the township needs to study the network of wastewater pipes on the East side, which historically has had flooding problems because of its location at the base of South and Lehigh mountains.

Tettemer proposed conducting the pipe study using the following methods:

  • Look for leaks and cracks in all manhole lids during wet weather.
  • Install nighttime flow meters in manholes.
  • Install cameras in 34,000 feet of clay sewer lines in the three worst areas, including Maumee and Lehigh avenues and Paxford, Potomac and Lexington streets, and review recording.

The entire project, which would go out for bid, could cost nearly $200,000, he said.
