Tredyffrin Township: Transformer Fire Closes Route 252

Firefighters are on the scene of transformer fire on the grounds of PECO plant, emergency officials report.

TREDYFFRIN TWP —A thick column of black smoke could be seen for miles this afternoon after a large transformer exploded at a PECO yard at Bear Hill Road and Heatherstone Drive, emergency officials reported.

The explosion resulted in 1,300 to 1,500 gallons of oil spilled, causing a massive fire, according to Patty Mains, public information officer for Chester County Emergency Services.

The fire broke out at 2:07 p.m.

Route 252 is closed in both directions between Friendship Drive and East Central and Howellville roads.

Tredyffrin Township police request that motorists avoid the area and do not drive around barricades.

The Chester County Department of Emergency Service Haz-Mat Team is at the scene.

Firefighters from Paoli, Berwyn and Malvern are also at the scene.
