How to Drop Off Old Drugs in Upper Macungie

New MedReturn box allows residents to dispose of old medicine Monday through Friday.

Since 2010, Lehigh County residents have disposed of close to 7,000 pounds of unused medication.

So rather than having people wait to the National Take Back Day for old drugs, Upper Macungie and other communities are giving residents a chance to dispose of unwanted meds five days a week.

The township on Tuesday installed a new  MedReturn box, based in the Upper Macungie police station, and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

According to the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office—which helped fund the program—here's what you can and can't dispose of with the new boxes:

ACCEPTED 

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Samples
  • Vitamins
  • Prescription ointments
  • Prescription patches
  • Pet medications

 NOT ACCEPTED

  • Syringes, needles, or other sharp objects
  • Medications from businesses and clinics
  • Lotions or liquids
  • Aerosol cans
  • Inhalers
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Thermometers
