5. Today in History: An unfortunate preseason hit permanently paralyzes the New England Patriots' Darryl Stingley. The Aug. 12, 1978 game against the Oakland Raiders put Stingley on the field with free safety Jack Tatum, who was already known for his ferocious hits. Though the game is known for rough hits and players sustaining concussions, Stingley’s injury is one of only two that led to paralysis in the history of the NFL. The other injury was to the Detroit Lions' Mike Utley.
