5. Today in History: On Aug. 18, 1590 John White, governor of the Roanoke colony in present-day North Carolina, returned from a supply trip to find that his entire colony has disappeared. The only clue, the word “Croatoan” carved in a tree, led White to believe that the colonists has resettled on nearby Croatoan island. However, the island showed no sign of the settlers. Theorists now believe that the settlers were absorbed into the Croatan tribe of Native Americans due to extreme drought.
