1. Weather: Warm and breezy, that’s today! According to the National Weather Service, today will be mostly sunny with a high of 89. A nice light breeze should be blowing through as well.

3. Coming Up:  State colleges and universities -including Penn State-Lehigh Valley- drastically increased their tuition for the coming year, but were still able to give faculty members raises. This week’s Pennsylvania Independent article looks at the topic.

5. Today in History: At 2am on Aug. 2 1990, Iraq crossed the border into its tiny (and oil-rich) neighbor Kuwait. Within hours, Iraq had overwhelmed the Kuwaiti troops, the emir of Kuwait had fled, and Iraq gained control of Kuwait. By Aug. 6, the United Nations Security Council banned trade with Iraq. By Aug. 9, the United States launched Operation Desert Shield. The following spring a cease-fire was declared, and the United States began to withdraw troops from the area. The Persian Gulf War lasted only 210 days, but Operation Desert Shield lasted till Nov. 1995.
