5. Today in History: On Aug. 23, 1989, baseball great Pete Rose was banned for life from baseball. Rose accepted punishment for gambling on baseball, a fact he didn’t admit until 2004. In his memoir My Prison Without Bars, Rose admitted to betting on his old team, the Cincinnati Reds, though he maintained he always bet on the Reds to win. Because of the lifetime ban, Rose can’t work in baseball and is not eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame.    Â
