5. Today in History: Today we’re reaching waaaaay back in history. On Aug. 24, 79 A.D., Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing thousands of residents in the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The two-day eruption spewed toxic gas and ash miles into the air. Many who stayed behind were killed by the gas and ash and then covered by mud. When human remains were discovered in 1982, their perfectly preserved molds showed the position they died in.
