5. Today in History: There’s life on the moon! Or, that’s what a series of articles published in The New York Sun led readers to believe. The first article, published on Aug. 25, 1835 was supposedly written by Dr. Andrew Grant, a “colleague” of Sir John Herschel, a well-known astronomer of the day. Grant claimed Herschel – who had actually traveled to South Africa to set up a power telescope – had found evidence of unicorns, two-legged beavers and winged humanoid bats. The whole thing was revealed as a hoax on Sept. 16 and came to be known as “The Great Moon Hoax.”
