5. Today in History: On Aug. 3, 1948, State Department official Alger Hiss was accused of being a Communist in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee. His accuser, Whittaker Chambers, had been a spy for the Soviet Union but left and offered his services to the FBI. Chambers maintained that Hiss was a spy almost as adamantly as Hiss denied he was. Hiss was later convicted of perjury and served 44 months in jail.
