5. Today in History: On Aug. 31, 1888 London prostitute Mary Ann Nichols is found dead on Whitechapel's Buck's Row in London. What officials were hoping was an isolated incident turned out to be the beginning of a series of killings by an unknown assailant known as “Jack the Ripper.” Jack the Ripper was never identified, and the killings ended two months later.
