5. Today in History: On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton faced longtime political antagonist Aaron Burr in an “affair of honor,” known today as a duel. Hamilton disagreed with Burr’s political motivations, once proclaiming that "I feel it is a religious duty to oppose his [Burr’s] career." Unfortunately for Hamilton, the duel in Weehawken, NJ ended when Burr’s shot hit Hamilton in the abdomen and lodged near his spine. Hamilton died the next day, and Burr was acquitted on a technicality for his murder.
