5. Today in History: Run Geraldine, run! On July 12, 1984, Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale announced U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his vice presidential running mate. Unfortunately for Mondale and Ferraro, the ticket was defeated by President Ronald Reagan/Vice President George Bush, who carried every state except Mondale's home state of Minnesota. Mondale/Ferraro narrowly won in the District of Columbia. Ferraro left Congress in 1985 and struggled with a cancer diagnosis on and off until her death in March 2011.
