Today in History: “Allons enfants de la patrie, Le jour de gloire est arrivé !” The song La Marseillaise, also known as the French National Anthem, is sang passionately throughout France on July 14, also known as Bastille Day. In 1789, French revolutionaries stormed the Bastille in Paris and freed prisoners, many who were held without a trial. The storming of the Bastille was the beginning of the end for the French monarchy, many of whom were captured and beheaded in the following years.
