5. Today in History: The “Trial of the Century” drew to a close on July 21, 1925 when a jury convicted schoolteacher John T. Scopes of teaching evolution in a classroom in Tennessee. Contrary to the myth, the Scopes Monkey Trial (as it was known) was never more than a show trial, with the jury convicting in mere minutes. Scopes was fined $100, but evolution won the battle, making its way into the mainstream.
