5. Today in History: You see them all around town, but how much do you really know about Mercedes automobiles? On June 23, 1902 German automaker Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft registered the name “Mercedes” for a new line of automobiles. The name “Mercedes” came from Emil Jellinek, a prominent Austrian diplomat and car enthusiast who started selling the German-made cars in France. It was his eldest daughter’s name, and Jellinek thought the name sounded more continental so the cars would sell better.
