Coopersburg Construction Crews Find Explosive at Bethlehem Twp. Kmart

Explosive device, possibly an old blasting cap, discovered underground at Route 191 plaza.

An explosive found embedded in concrete beneath a Bethlehem Township shopping plaza was detonated late Wednesday afternoon, according to a Morning Call report.

The discovery, by D&D Maintenance, a construction company based in Coopersburg working on an addition to the Kmart shopping plaza on Route 191, prompted the evacuation of the shopping center and a call to explosives experts from Bethlehem and Allentown.

According to later reports, the device looked to be an old blasting cap and a stick of dynamite.

Emergency crews were still at the scene Wednesday afternoon, hours after the device was found. The experts confirmed it was an explosive and went ahead with detonation.

The explosion was not very large and no one was injured.
