Pamela Varkony Sworn Into PA Commission for Women

Pamela Varkony of Allentown was sworn in last Monday to serve on the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, which develops economic and civic opportunities for women.

Varkony, a women's advocate, commentator and former Allentown councilwoman, is the founder of the Power of Women Conference at Cedar Crest College. She is active in Bpeace, a nonprofit organization that helps women with business opportunities in conflict-affected countries.

Varkony was sworn in by Lehigh County President Judge Carol K. McGinley, the first woman president of Lehigh County Court. The commission’s executive director, Maria Montero, spoke at the ceremony, which was attended by Lehigh County Commissioners Vic Mazziotti and and District Justice Ronald Manescu.

Varkony was appointed by Gov. Tom Corbett in May to serve on the 28-member commission. The women selected to serve represent a diverse cross-section of Pennsylvania, from CEOs to sole proprietors, leaders in county government to presidents of borough council, international speakers and writers to local mentors for young women.

Other commission members include Chairwoman Sue Schick and Janice Haahs, both of Montgomery County.
