"Potentially Hazardous", "Doomsday" Asteroid Apophis Passing Earth Today

We are barely a week into the new year, only a few weeks past the the "end" of the Mayan calendar Dec. 21, and we've got another visitor to our galaxy.

Near-earth asteroid 99942 Apophis will hurtle past earth. Recently, Asteroid Toutatis-- also classified as a "potentially hazardous" object-- passed by Earth.

According to Wikipedia, the 99942 Apophis is classified as "potentially hazardous" because a study in 2004 gave the asteroid a 2.7 percent chance of hitting Earth or moon in 2029. It's 300 yards long, the equivalent of three football fields. 

The experts at Slooh.com say that if an object the estimated size of this asteroid hit earth, it would do the same damage as 510 megatons of TNT. But never fear, this asteroid isn't a size that would cause an "extinction-level devistation to earth," said Slooh astronomer Paul Paolucci.
