Solehi HS Students Participate in 'Day of Silence' to End Bullying
Southern Lehigh High School students stay silent to bring awareness to bullying

Today, the halls of are little quieter than normal as students take a stand for the National Day of Silence.Â
According to Wikipedia, the National Day of Silence "is specific to ending bullying and harassment of students, particularly physical violence and verbal threats." Students pledge not to speak for a period of time, often carrying cards with information about the event. The event is a grassroots project sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.
The action comes on the heels of several high profile deaths and throughout the nation that have been attributed in some part to bullying in schools.

Southern Lehigh isn't the only local district participating in the event. In the past, districts such as Nazareth Area School District, Saucon Valley School District, and the Quakertown Community School District have all participated in the program.Â
Kate Mack, 2011's Mrs. Pennsylvania, is also the teacher advisor for the student group organizing the event. Recently, Mack  talking about her own bullying experience.Â

"Our main priority is that ALL students feel safe in our schools, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity/preferences, socioeconomic status, or anything else that might set a student apart from others," said Mack via email. "Part of that process involves understanding the negative effects of bullying and harassment in schools, and the National Day of Silence raises awareness of those effects."
