Spartan Service Corps Highlighted During International Videoconference

After-school club the Spartan Service Corps gives tips to an international crowd about their highly successful Alex's Lemonade Stand

by Jennifer Johnson

In October of 2011, the Spartan Service Corps was established at the SL Intermediate School under the direction of two parents, Jennifer Johnson and Linda Wentling.  The goal of the after-school club is to get students involved in service projects in their community.  The student members meet once a month to decide on a charity to help and/or a community service project.

This past year, we have collected candy for the troops, had a hot chocolate sale for Animals in Distress, and made Valentine gifts for local Assisted Living residents.  The latest project was an Alex's Lemonade Stand.  On April 19 & 20, students sold lemonade in the cafeteria during all lunch periods.  All proceeds were given to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.  The group raised a total of $550.00 in two days.

The students were very proud of their effort and went on to participate in the Virtual Alex's Lemonade Stand Project, which included a videoconference on May 8.

During the videoconference the IS students connected with 13 schools from around the country--and even one school from Taiwan!  The SL Intermediate School was highlighted because we organized a fun, successful lemonade stand.  Our Spartan Service Corps 6th grade members were able to advise the other schools on how to set up a successful stand.

The students were very proud that they were able to help raise awareness and needed funds for pediatric cancer.
