Updated: Gas Leak Closes Route 117 in Coventry

A gas pipe was broken at the Coventry Credit Union on Main Street on Thursday, causing Route 117 to close for a brief period.

UPDATE: Main Street has reopened.

COVENTRY, RI—A ruptured gas line at Coventry Credit Union on Main Street led to Route 117 being closed on Thursday morning.

Coventry's emergency management agency issued an alert at around 10:15 a.m. notifying residents that Route 117 is closed from Sandy Bottom to South Main Street. The road is fully blocked.

According to reports, the break was caused by a construction machine that struck the gas line.

Police and firefighters are in the area.
