Five Things: Great Weather, Lifeguard Test

Your guide for life in North Kingstown today, July 30.

Tuesday Summer Concerts: White Eyed Lizard Band will be playing at the water’s edge in Wickford, behind 55 Brown Street tonight at 7. For a list of all the upcoming summer concerts, check out the NK Arts Council website here.

Lifeguard certification testing: The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Parks and Recreation will administer surf lifeguard certification tests, starting Monday, to certify lifeguards for the year 2014. Surf tests will be given daily from Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett. (Non-surf tests will be given daily from Tuesday, August 13, through Friday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Prosser Grove Picnic area in Burlingame State Park in Charlestown.) No appointment is necessary. For those who pass, there is a $10 fee for the 2014 state certification card.

Lafayette Band concert: The Lafayette Band of North Kingstown perform Wednesday at NK Town Beach. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to relax and join in the family fun. Pelosi Performance Center at NK Town Beach. 7 p.m. Free.

Traveler’s Talks w/Honore Johnson at Willett Free Library: After growing up in Saunderstown and graduating from North Kingstown High School,  Honore became involved with Rotary International, was selected to be a Rotary Youth Exchange Student and traveled to Peru where she lived for a year. Honore just finished her freshman year at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Next year she will be studying international relations and conflict resolution at Cornell's ILR School. Come hear her talk about her experiences at Willett Free Library at 7 p.m.

Did you know ... ? Jimmy Hoffa disappeared 38 years ago today, from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, at about 2:30 p.m. He is never seen or heard from again, and was declared legally dead on this date in 1982, according to Wikipedia.
