Walter Joseph Hines, 93, of North Kingstown and formerly of East Providence died on September 1. He was the husband of the late Marguerite Adams Hines; they had been married for 58 years until her death in 2005.
Mr. Hines was employed at the Mobil Oil Company Refinery in East Providence for 43 years and he retired as a terminal supervisor in 1983. He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 serving as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant in the New Guinea and Philippine Islands Campaigns. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star and other military honors.
Mr. Hines enjoyed golfing and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. He sang bass in the Saint Brendan Church Choir for 30 years until moving to North Kingstown in 1998.
He was preceded in death by six siblings: Eleanor Hines Grant, Marion Hines Peace, Dolores Hines, Edward, James, and John Hines.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters: Walter of Bonita Springs, Florida; Stephen of Jamestown; Patricia of North Kingstown; and Marilyn of Greene. He was also father-in-law of Monica Hines, Anne Kuhn-Hines, Salvatore Manforte, and Diane Cook. He leaves seven grandchildren: Liam, Russell, Coral, Nathanael, Madison, Devlin, and Harris; as well as many nephews, nieces, and extended family members.
His funeral will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, at 8:45 a.m. from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Francis de Sales Church, 381 School St., North Kingstown. Burial with Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Home & Hospice Care of R.I., 1085 North Main St., Providence, R.I. 02904 will be appreciated.
