Police Log: Breathalyzer Thwarted By Burps
Information about the following incidents was supplied by the North Kingstown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
DUI Suspect Burps Himself Out of Breathalyzer
Terence Arthur Gould II, 39, of 2005 Middle Rd. in East Greenwich was arrested Jan. 26 at 6:05 a.m. on charges of driving under the influence and cited for refusing to take a chemical test.
Gould allegedly lost control of his car while driving down Shermantown Road after hitting a patch of snow. The car, which was found to be a rental, had heavy damage to the front end. The driver, Gould, told police the damage was from an incident the week before when something fell on his car.

Police noted that Gould appeared to be under the influence, as he smelled of alcohol and had trouble keeping his balance. He allegedly told officers he had been drinking all evening at his cousin’s house. According to reports, officers found an empty bottle of ginger-flavored brandy in the back of Gould’s car.
After failing his field sobriety test, Gould was placed under arrest and taken to the North Kingstown Police Department. Officers attempted to administer a Breathalyzer test on Gould, but were unable to do so due to his excessive burping, as the burping could affect the test results. Gould told officers he couldn't quell the burps and signed a "refusal to submit to a chemical test" form.
