RI Air National Guard Breaks Ground On New HQ In North Kingstown

Features of the new building will include a medical facility, a 10,000-square-foot dining hall, and new technology for emergency command.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — The Rhode Island Air National Guard will soon have a new headquarters in Quonset.

The 143rd Airlift Wing of the Rhode Island Air National Guard held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for its new $46 million headquarters at the Quonset Air National Guard Base.

Us. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) and several state lawmakers attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new national guard headquarters, WPRI 12 reported.

"We’re here because we have a solemn obligation and commitment to the men and women who serve us bravely, courageously, selflessly," Reed told WPRI 12. "They have to have the best facilities."

Features of the new building will include a medical facility, a 10,000-square-foot dining hall, and technology that will allow the headquarters to function as an emergency command and control center 24 hours a day.

The new headquarters will be more than 43,000 square feet, much smaller than the current 71,000-square-foot facility. Reed said the downsizing is being done for efficiency reasons. It will replace the current headquarters, which is 71-years-old.

The new headquarters is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
