The Highway Department hit something unexpected Thursday morning while working to replace a culvert under Earle Drive: the water main.
"The plans from 1952 said the water main was going under the culvert," and about five feet west of where they found it Thursday morning, said Bob Vargas, superintendent of the NK Highway Department.
The culvert is being rebuilt because it had caved in at some point, Vargas said, causing a depression in the road and flooding during big storms.
After they hit the water main Thursday, the town water department came to shut off water to homes on the north side of the culvert.
The video attached here shows the highway workers digging to locate the water main. The water department was to come back to patch the leak and then restore water service.
Vargas said they'd hoped to finish putting in the new culvert on Thursday, but now it would likely go into Friday.
"It's nobody's fault," he said. "It's just the way it is."
