SFD Log: Aid to Woonsocket, Child Struck by Car

The Smithfield Fire Department responded to a total of 74 calls for service between Sept. 22 and 28.

A response for mutual aid during a Woonsocket house fire Sept. 22 and a local child struck by a car Sept. 23 near a bus stop were among the Smithfield Fire Department's 74 calls between Sept. 22 and 28. 

Fire Chief Bob Seltzer said the call for the struck child came in at 7:54 a.m., summoning responders to 279 Waterman Ave., near a bus stop. The child was transported to a Hasbro Children's Hospital with internal injuries, and was last reported in stable condition, he said.

During the mutual aid call, Smithfield's Engine 2  was dispatched to cover Woonsocket's Providence St. Firehouse while the City's companies were at a well-advanced fire in the 641 South Main St. building that Sunday at about 11:45 a.m.

Of the 74 calls the department responded to during this period, 46 were for medical emergencies, resulting in 44 transports to local hospitals.  

Fire Department personnel from all three firehouses responded to the calls:

· Engine 1 responded to 40 calls.

· Rescue 1 responded to 38 calls.

· Engine 2 responded to 36 calls.

· Rescue 2 responded to 30 calls.

· Ladder 1 responded to 8 calls.

Types of calls include:

· 1 Standby for a 3-alarm fire in the city of Woonsocket, Engine 2 responded mutual aid to the City of Woonsocket.

· 1 Child struck by a vehicle.

· 46 EMS calls

· 1 Motor Vehicle Accidents with injuries.

· 10 Accidental or unintentional fire alarm activations.

The Fire Prevention Division conducted 7 resale smoke/carbon monoxide safety inspections, 4 residential plan reviews.
