Officer Joseph Marcello was called to the Shell Gas Station at 370 Putnam Pike at about 5:16 p.m. Aug. 29 for a report of a skateboarder hit by a vehicle in the parking lot.
Upon arriving, Marcello spoke with the 17-year-old skateboarder, who said he'd been riding his skateboard west on the sidewalk past the station when a gray Pontiac at the exit into the street.
Both skateboarder and driver continued in their respective paths, impacting each other, with the skateboarder getting the worse of the crash, according to Marcello's report. The skateboarder told the officer he went over the vehicle and landed on the ground, scraping his right forearm.
Marcello spoke with the driver, Timothy Schmeltz, 25, of 1975 E. Wallum Lake Road, Pascoag, who told the officer he didn't intentionally strike the 17-year-old, and had thought he had enough time to get out of the driveway without hitting the youth.
The 17-year-old refused treatment and transport by Smithfield Rescue, and Marcello contacted the boy's father.
