Smithfield PD Investigating Thefts from Construction Yards

Two separate thefts occurred within four days of each other, according to Smithfield Police.

Smithfield Police reported two separate thefts from construction yards in town that occurred four days apart.

In the more recent incident, Patrol Ofc. Scott Hopkins responded to A.G.I. Construction on Appian Way on July 26 and spoke with CEO Don Gaunt, who said that the company's surveillance cameras had recorded a two-tone Dodge pick-up truck enter the yard at about midnight and two men load the truck with more than $4,000 worth of supplies.

Gaunt later provided a list of stolen items, including 1,000 lbs. each of channel iron, angle iron, and tube iron; 20 dump truck batteries; four new truck rims; two tires; and assorted scrap metal.

Hopkins noted that he referred the case to the Detective Division.

In the earlier case, Patrol Ofc. Paul Gorman went to Douglas Construction on Rte. 7 on July 22 at about 1 p.m. and spoke with office manager Denise Randall, who said that six steel form baskets, measuring 7 ft. by 4 ft. by 5 ft. had apparently been stolen from the yard.

Randall said that it would take two people to lift the baskets, and that they would fit in a pick-up truck.

Gorman noted that there were no cameras in the area of the apparent theft.

Police are seeking leads in these cases. Call (401) 231-2500 if you have any information.
