Smithfield Police Nab 19-Year-Old on DUI, Drug Charges

A local officer arrested Seamus Connole after seeing his vehicle leave the lane of travel and ride up onto the curb. Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Smithfield Police reported the recent arrest of a 19-year-old man on DUI and drug charges after a local officer said he saw the man's car leave the roadway.

On July 22 at about 1:20 a.m., Ptlm. Ryan Perry reported that he was traveling west on Putnam Pike behind a silver Volkswagen when he saw the car "swerve over the white fog line, up onto the curbing of the sidewalk."

As the car returned to the travel lane, Perry wrote in his report that the Volkswagen "continued to swerve back and forth."

Perry stated that he pulled over the car at 545 Putnam Pike, and spoke with the driver, identified as Seamus Connole, of 18 Maplewood Orchard Drive.

Connole smelled of alcohol, and the car smelled of marijuana, Perry wrote in his report, adding that Connole's speech was slurred and his eyes looked bloodshot.

After securing Connole in handcuffs, Perry reported that he searched the Volkswagen and found two jars of marijuana, later measured to weigh 2.5 grams.

Perry then brought Connole to police headquarters, where he refused a chemical test, according to police reports.

Officers charged Connole with one count each of DUI, refusal to submit to a chemical test, possession of 1 oz. or less of marijuana, and a laned roadway violation.

Connole is due in Third District Court, Warwick on Aug. 6 for the DUI charge, and in the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal on Aug. 5 for the other charges.
