Smithfield Rates 24th among 37 RI Communities for Violent Crime

Smithfield is ranked in the mid-range among the state's most violent communities, according to analysis conducted by golocalprov.com. The study used 2012 crime statistics released by the FBI earlier this month. 

Out of 37 Rhode Island communities that report crime data to the FBI, Smithfield ranked 24, with 13 violent crimes in a population of 21,411. Richmond and Little Compton tied for least violent with no violent crimes. Central Falls ranked most violent with 142 violent crimes in a population of 19,360.

Smithfield reported one forcible rape and 12 aggravated assaults for 2012.

Nationally, the number of violent crimes increased 0.7 percent over the previous year, according to the data.
