Smithfield Town Council to Vote on Bryant Deal Tuesday

A proposed deal asking Bryant University to pay $300,000 for fire and police services annually and a $150,000 emergency services capital fee every 5 years is on Tuesday's Town Council agenda.

Councilors will meet Tuesday at Smithfield Town Hall, 64 Farnum Pike, at 6:30 p.m.

In July, Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed a law allowing the town to bill Bryant for fire and police services if a separate agreement with the university cannot be reached. On Sept. 17, the Council voted 3-2 to negotiate with the university without consultants' advice, according to a report from the Valley Breeze.

The Valley Breeze reports a final draft of the proposal, including provisions for expanded scholarships from the university, will be ready for a vote by Tuesday's meeting, and, if approved, will be sent to Bryant.
