City Of Columbia Police Department: Man Accused Of Stealing Food Delivery Vehicle Captured Shortly After Crime

Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers arrested a 37-year-old man shortly after he allegedly stole a food delivery vehicle.

John Melvin Bailey (DOB: 8-31-1984) is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) charged with Grand Larceny Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Driving Under Suspension and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens.

Shortly around 9:30 a.m. (December 6, 2021), Bailey allegedly stole a Toyota Sequoia while it was it idling unattended at 1941 Blossom Street.

The male victim admits leaving the key in the ignition. When the victim went back outside, he noticed the suspect inside the vehicle and attempted to stop him from driving away.

When the attempt was unsuccessful, the victim flagged down a driver and asked him to follow the suspect. The two followed the vehicle for a short time while calling 9-1-1. A description of the stolen vehicle was broadcast over the police radio. An officer spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Additional officers assisted with the traffic stop. After about five minutes, Bailey and the stolen vehicle were stopped at Gervais and Huger Streets where the suspect was immediately arrested.

• Don’t leave your car running and unattended.
• Don’t leave keys in the ignition or anywhere inside of a vehicle
• Lock your car, set the alarm and take all keys and key fobs.
• Report a stolen car with local enforcement immediately
• Take an updated photo of your vehicle. If your vehicle is stolen, the picture can assist officers with recovery efforts
• Do not take police matters into your own hands
