Coroner Releases Name of Boy Struck, Killed Near Watkins-Nance

7-year-old first-grader Joshua Brown died from multiple trauma after being hit by a truck Wednesday, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

The 7-year-old boy who died after being hit by a truck Wednesday at Watkins-Nance Elementary was Joshua Brown, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Brown, a first-grader at the school, was hit by a truck when he ran into the street in the 2500 block of Barnhamville Road around 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, Watts said. He was transported to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. 

Brown was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m., Watts said. An autopsy showed that he died from multiple trauma.

There was no sign that the truck that struck Brown was speeding, according to a report in The State. The boy was last seen standing with a group of students on the sidewalk. 

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the incident.
