Update: Deputy Shoots, Kills Suspect During Struggle

A Richland County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man Thursday during an altercation on Longcreek Drive off Broad River Road.

A Richland County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man early Thursday morning after the man tried to take the deputy's gun during an altercation off Broad River Road, according to the sheriff's department.

Keith J. Durham, 30, of 3001 Magnolia Street in Columbia, died from complications of a gunshot wound to the upper body, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Deputy Reginald Grant was patrolling around 4 a.m. when he noticed Durham and a woman fighting at the at 1335 Garner Lane, according to the sheriff's department.

When Grant approached the pair, he became suspicious of Durham and asked to search him for weapons, according to the sheriff's department. 

Durham fled, and Grant chased him for about 75 yards to the 1300 block of Longcreek Drive, according to the sheriff's department. When Grant captured Durham, he began fighting back and was able to grab Grant's Taser and fire it at the deputy's leg.

Durham then tried to take Grant's gun but was unsuccessful, according to the sheriff's department. When the suspect grabbed Grant's Taser again, Grant fired multiple shots at him. 

Durham was transported to Palmetto Health Richland but died from injuries sustained during the altercation. 

Grant suffered injuries to his arm and his knee, and was also taken to Palmetto Health Richland.

Deputies also found a large bag of cocaine on Durham according to the sheriff's department.
