Man Dies After Choking Himself in Holding Cell

The 51-year-old man was taken to the hospital where he died, Coroner Gary Watts said.

A 51-year-old man died Thursday after he asphyxiated himself in a holding cell at the traffic court building on Huger Street, according to the Richland County Coroner's Office. 

Robin O. Mock used his pants to create a ligature and choke himself, Coroner Gary Watts said. He was transported to the emergency room at Richland Memorial Hospital where he died.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident at the request of the Richland County Sherriff’s Department.
