Speak Out: Should Colleges Have to Earn Their Funding?

Gov. Nikki Haley said this week that she would like to fund colleges and universities based on their performance.

A plan proposed this week by Gov. Nikki Haley to higher education and business leaders across the state would have colleges and universities earning their funding through performance.

Haley told a Columbia gathering on Wednesday that higher education should be funded based on job placement, apprenticeships, affordable tuition and other metrics. She said it will force large schools to compete and allow smaller schools a chance to excel.

Higher education officials said more money will be needed to accomplish these goals.
