$60,000 Alcoa Grant Benefits Clemson's Game-day Recycling Program
Grant will allow program to expand and improve

Clemson University received a grant from Alcoa to expand and improve its game-day recycling program.
The $60,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation will help with the goal of reaching 45,000 more fans and adding 350 student volunteers. The grant will fund more than 100 new recycling stations and buy a Segway to help promote recycling at football games.
Game-day recycling started in 2000 with Students for Environmental Action and grew in 2007 with more volunteers and recycling bins. In 2010, volunteers gave green recycling bags to tailgaters, and with the help of the athletics department in 2011 expanded the program to include recycling inside the stadium. This year the program has added new green bag dispensers and has seen a boost in volunteers and fan participation, said Dave VanDeventer, Clemson's recycling manager.
“A grant of this extent will allow us to take Clemson game-day recycling to the next tier and have one of the best programs in the country,” said VanDeventer.
