Former Easley Surgeon Dies

Dr. John Patrick Shayne, 57, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2012, after a long battle with brain cancer. John was a graduate of The State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976 and SUNY at Buffalo Medical School in 1980. John was a general surgery resident at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, graduated in 1985, and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He practiced general surgery for many years at Kings’ Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Va., and at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Va. He went on to practice general surgery in San Antonio, and then at Baptist Hospital Easley in Easley, S.C.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Bonnie Neel Shayne; daughters Mary Shayne Brophy and her husband, Stephen J. Brophy of Dublin, Ireland; Christine Shayne Medina and her husband, Mario R. Medina of San Antonio, Texas; son Timothy Patrick Shayne of Seneca, South Carolina; sister Mary Shayne Mercuris and her husband Bret Mercuris; and brother Michael T. Shayne and his wife Caryn. He is also survived by his granddaughter Elena Michelle Medina and her sister Gabriela as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Roger C. and Mary J. Shayne and his sisters Rita and Eileen Shayne. It was John's wish to donate his body to a medical school when he entered eternal life. He wanted to pass along the gift he received in anatomy class to another. John's body will be donated to the medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas.

Visitation and Vigil Service will be at Mission Park North Funeral Chapel in San Antonio on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. Vigil and Rosary will be at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in San Antonio at 9:30 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to: Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 10703 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78230-2499 and St. Anthony School Capital Campaign, 307 Gower St., Greenville, SC 29611.
