Attack on Sassafras Ride Postponed Until Next Year

Not enough riders signed up to participate in inaugural ride, but organizers hope word will get out to cyclists before 2013 event.

A challenging ride that would have tackled the highest point in South Carolina had to be canceled for lack of participation.

Planners say not enough riders registered for the first year of the event, but they hope to offer the ride again next year.

Tri-County Technical College’s Easley Campus had partnered with the Pickens County YMCA to sponsor what they hoped would be a signature annual event for the community.

Attack on Sassafras Mountain, an all-day event for cyclists, was set for Saturday, October 13.

Organizers said that cyclists would ride through parts of the cities of Easley and Pickens and up through the beautiful foothills region of South Carolina, including a challenging climb to South Carolina’s highest point -- Sassafras Mountain (3,553 ft.).  Cyclists would travel a distance of 70 miles (35 miles to the top of the mountain).  The ride was set to start and end at the Easley Campus.
