Bridge Named For Dr. Virgil Mitchell
Six Mile native was named Southern Wesleyan University's Alumnus of the Century.

The Twelve Mile River Bridge along S.C. Highway 137 was named Dec. 9 for Dr. Virgil Mitchell, a Six Mile native who served on the administration of Southern Wesleyan University and also as general superintendent of The Wesleyan Church.
Pictured at center is Mary Mitchell, Dr. Mitchell’s widow; along with Mary Ellen Kelley, Mitchell’s sister; and Charlie Mitchell, Mitchell’s brother. Dr. Mitchell, who died in 2006 at age 92, was named Alumnus of the Century by SWU.
Sen. Larry Martin (R-S.C.) and Phillip Bowers, Pickens County Republican Party Chairman, unveiled a sign renaming the bridge, located between Norris and Six Mile, the “Dr. Virgil Mitchell Bridge.” Martin sponsored the resolution earlier this year in the State Senate to request that the S.C. Department of Transportation name the bridge for Dr. Mitchell.
