USA Lacrosse has offered the city a $5,000 - $7,000 grant, to be used to purchase equipment for the program, which city officials hope to start in the spring.

City Administrator Fox Simons told rec committee members

about efforts to bring lacrosse to Easley.

Wednesday morning, he gave committee an update on the program.

“We're still looking at starting in late spring or early summer,” Simons said.

The grant will provide equipment for 25 boys and 25 girls, he said.

There are a few stipulations connected to the grant.

50 players, 25 girls and 25 boys, must become members of USA Lacrosse, Simons said.

“It's free for the first year, but it's discounted to $10 the second year,” he said. “We can put other kids in that program if we so choose, but it's $10 per child.”

The city also must send two coaches to USA Lacrosse's convention in Philadelphia.

“They'll cover some of the travel costs,” Simons said.

The grant also stipulates coaches go through mandatory online coaches education programs.

“That's not a bad thing, since we're starting a new program,” Simons said.

Rec officials are looking for people interested in coaching the lacrosse teams.

They're going to reach out to Clemson University's club program and Furman University's collegiate program to see if players would be interested in helping the program get off the ground.
