Clemson Fraternity/Sorority Life Hosts 5K

Clemson University Fraternity and Sorority Life will host the fourth annual Clemson Student Memorial 5K at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, to benefit the Student Memorial Project to build an all-faiths chapel and student memorial garden on campus. 

Registration is open to runners and walkers. To register or donate, visit http://clemsonstudentmemorial5k.com/. Registration is $25, and all proceeds benefit the Student Memorial Project.

The course begins behind the Cooper Library and will end at the Greek Quad. There will be an event in the Quad kicking off at the same time as the race with food and entertainment. That event is open to the public and will be open for race participants after they finish the course. Proceeds from food sales and donations also will benefit the Student Memorial Project. 

“The more that we talk with students, the more it becomes apparent that a place set apart for remembrance, reflection and prayer is not just something that students desire, it is a need of the student body that is currently unfilled,” said Student Memorial Project committee chairwoman Kathleen McKissack.

“I think this truth is best demonstrated by the fact that three other student organizations are putting on events to fundraise for us this semester alone," she said. "The Student Memorial 5K is the largest of these events, and we are so thankful that Fraternity and Sorority Life shares our vision and is working tirelessly to make it a reality.”

The Clemson Student Memorial 5K was established in 2009 to remember and honor those students who have passed away while enrolled at Clemson. The mission of the project is to provide students with a place of tranquility where they can go to reflect, meditate and/or pray.

The first Clemson Student Memorial 5K took place in November 2009 with more than 300 participants. The event continues to gain momentum and has become an annual philanthropic endeavor for Clemson University Fraternity and Sorority Life.
