UPDATE: Coroner Identifies Daniel Student Killed in Crash, School Observes Moment of Silence

The name of the Daniel High School student killed in a crash in Six Mile on Monday evening has been identified.

According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, Justin Eric Roach, 16, of 113 Rebecca Lane, Central, died of blunt force trauma after being ejected from the truck he was a passenger in.

The coroner said that Roach, who was seated in the passenger side of the truck, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Roach was remembered at the start of school this morning as faculty, staff and students at Daniel High School observed a moment of silence, according to Principal Sharon Huff.

"We are really trying to take our cues from the students by listening and trying to respond to their needs," Huff said in a statement released by the school district. "Our teachers are very sensitive to the fact that the loss of a classmate and friend is extremely difficult for students to handle. They are making sure that students who need extra attention and support today are receiving that help. We extend our sympathy to Justin's family, friends, classmates, and teachers.”

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the wreck happened just before 7 p.m. on Ponderosa Drive, south of Bella Shoals Road, which is one mile east of the town of Six Mile.

The 1984 pickup truck overturned as it was heading north on Ponderosa Road, troopers said.

According to troopers, the driver was a 15-year-old boy, who was wearing a seat belt. He was taken by ambulance to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Two other passengers were also in the pickup at the time of the wreck, troopers said.

A 16-year-old boy was sitting in the center of the cab wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to troopers.

Another 17-year-old boy, who was in the cargo area of the bed of the truck, was ejected in the wreck. He was taken to Easley Hospital in a personal vehicle, troopers said.

Behavioral Health and Mental Health are on the Daniel campus this morning, as well as several area youth pastors, to help counsel students or faculty members as needed. Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the S.C. Highway Patrol also is assisting the school with talking with students about the crash.
