Join the Clemson University Symphony Orchestra for an evening of classical works and a Christmas pops sing-along at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts.
In honor of the Clemson Memorial Carillon’s 25th anniversary, carillonneur Linda Dzuris partners with the symphony orchestra for the first piece of the program, "Concerto Pastorale" composed by LaSalle Spier for his friend and carillonneur Charles T. Chapmen.
In 1957, Chapmen was recorded playing the solo part of the piece and an “electronic engineer” ran the tape deck as the orchestra accompanied in a 1958 performance at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The Clemson orchestra and Dzuris recreate this collaboration in the same manner, substituting a laptop for the tape deck.

Next, the symphony orchestra takes on "The Blue Danube Waltz" by Johann Strauss Jr.
“You won’t be able to sit still in your seats, the waltz beat is so engaging,” said director Andrew Levin.

The performance takes a turn toward the holidays with “O Magnum Mysterium,” which was first composed as an unaccompanied choral work referring to the birth of Jesus, in an arrangement for strings.
The evening ends with a Christmas medley with the audience encouraged to sing along to such favorites as “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” “Silver Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman” and more.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available for purchase online at www.clemson.edu/Brooks and through the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
